Rail ramp drayage at Appliance Park and Buechel, and Louisville's river and air freight

Louisville combines Norfolk Southern rail ramps, Ohio River barge terminals and UPS Worldport, the company's global air hub. Drayage here serves auto plants, appliance makers, bourbon distilleries and a fast-growing warehouse market on both sides of the river.

How container drayage works in Louisville

Louisville has two Norfolk Southern rail ramps, Appliance Park and Buechel, linking the city with East Coast ports and Chicago. A newer UP–NS service adds a rail route west. Bullitt County, south along I-65, is the area's biggest warehouse cluster.

More about drayage in Louisville

Norfolk Southern runs two intermodal terminals in Louisville: Appliance Park, next to GE Appliances' manufacturing complex on the south side, and Buechel, an older facility on Jennings Lane in the eastern part of the city.

Buechel was briefly closed in 2021 and reopened to handle inbound traffic from the Port of Virginia's Norfolk International Terminals and Virginia International Gateway. Together the ramps link Louisville with East Coast ports, Chicago and other Norfolk Southern markets.

Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern have also launched interline domestic intermodal service connecting Louisville with western markets, expanding options for shippers who previously relied on trucks or Chicago ramps for West Coast freight.

Local drayage carriers move containers between the ramps and plants, warehouses and distribution centers in Jefferson, Bullitt, Shelby and Oldham counties, and across the Ohio River in Southern Indiana. Bullitt County, south of the city along I-65, has become a major warehouse cluster.

Autos, appliances and manufacturing

Louisville is a major manufacturing center. Ford builds vehicles at Louisville Assembly Plant and Kentucky Truck Plant, and GE Appliances makes household appliances at Appliance Park. These plants and their suppliers import parts and ship products, creating steady container traffic.

Automotive and appliance supply chains run on tight schedules, so drayage must be coordinated with plant dock appointments. Carriers serving these customers are familiar with live unloads, yard moves and strict delivery windows. Other manufacturers in the region produce chemicals, food products and consumer goods, adding to the variety of drayage work.

UPS Worldport, e-commerce and Bullitt County

UPS Worldport at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is the company's global air hub, and its presence has attracted e-commerce and logistics companies to the region. Many fulfillment centers and distribution warehouses are located near the airport and in Bullitt County along I-65.

Containers delivered to these warehouses often hold consumer goods that will be sorted and shipped by air or ground across the country. Drayage carriers deliver containers on schedules that match warehouse operations.

Southern Indiana, especially Jeffersonville and the River Ridge Commerce Center, has also grown as a logistics location, and carriers cross the Ohio River bridges daily.

Bourbon exports and the Ohio River

Kentucky bourbon is a growing export, and Louisville is at the heart of the industry. Distilleries in and around the city ship barrels and bottled spirits to international markets in containers, often by truck to rail ramps or directly to ports.

The Ohio River provides barge access to the Gulf, and Louisville has riverport facilities that handle bulk and some container traffic. Barge shipping is used mainly for bulk commodities, but it adds another option for heavy freight. River crossings on the I-65 and I-64 bridges can be congested, and tolls apply on some bridges. Carriers factor these costs into their pricing.

Southern Indiana and the River Ridge Commerce Center

Across the Ohio River, Clark County, Indiana, has become part of Louisville's logistics market. The River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville, built on the former Indiana Army Ammunition Plant, covers thousands of acres and hosts large distribution and manufacturing operations that ship and receive containers.

Drayage between Louisville's rail terminals and Southern Indiana uses the I-65 bridges and the newer East End crossing on I-265. Some of these bridges are tolled, and carriers include the tolls in their pricing.

For shippers, Southern Indiana offers large sites and quick access to both Louisville's rail ramps and I-65 north toward Indianapolis, making it a common choice for new warehouses.
