Drayage at CSX's Carolina Connector intermodal hub in Eastern North Carolina

Rocky Mount is home to the Carolina Connector (CCX), a CSX intermodal terminal that opened in 2018 on the I-95 corridor. Drayage here links the terminal with Eastern North Carolina's manufacturers, agricultural exporters and distribution centers, and with the Port of Wilmington's rail service to the Midwest.

How container drayage works in Rocky Mount

CSX's Carolina Connector near Rocky Mount, opened in 2018, is the rail hub where CSX's I-95 main line meets the routes to Wilmington and Charlotte. It gives Eastern North Carolina shippers a rail ramp close to home and daily trains between the Port of Wilmington and the Midwest.

More about drayage in Rocky Mount

CSX opened the Carolina Connector in November 2018 on about 330 acres near Rocky Mount, where its main north-south line along I-95 meets lines toward Wilmington and Charlotte. The terminal was built to transfer containers efficiently between trains and to serve shippers in Eastern North Carolina who previously had to truck containers long distances to ports or ramps.

CCX connects the Port of Wilmington and other East Coast ports with destinations across the CSX network. North Carolina Ports used it to launch the Wilmington Midwest Express, offering daily rail service between the port and the Midwest via Rocky Mount.

Local drayage carriers move containers between CCX and plants, farms and warehouses in Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, Halifax and nearby counties, and run regional moves to Raleigh, Greenville and Virginia.

Agriculture and food exports

Eastern North Carolina is a major agricultural region, producing sweet potatoes, tobacco, cotton, soybeans and hogs. Sweet potatoes in particular are exported to Europe and other markets, often in refrigerated containers.

Food processing plants and packers in the region use CCX to move containers to ports, avoiding long truck hauls. Reefer exports need gensets and cold storage coordination. Harvest seasons create peaks in empty container demand, and shippers work with carriers to secure equipment.

Manufacturing and pharmaceuticals

The region has a growing manufacturing base, including pharmaceuticals and life sciences in Rocky Mount and Wilson, as well as food, textiles and industrial products. Pharmaceutical shipments may require temperature control and careful handling. Distribution centers along I-95 and US-64 serve the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, and some import containers through CCX. Manufacturers benefit from rail access that reduces costs for heavy or high-volume freight.

I-95, US-64 and regional routes

Interstate 95 runs north-south through Rocky Mount, linking it with Virginia and South Carolina. US-64 runs east-west to Raleigh and the coast, and I-87 is being developed between Raleigh and Norfolk through the area. These highways make Rocky Mount a strategic location for distribution and drayage, with Raleigh about 60 miles away and Norfolk about 120 miles away. Hurricanes and tropical storms can bring flooding to Eastern North Carolina. Carriers monitor conditions and adjust routes.

How the Carolina Connector changed Eastern North Carolina

Before CCX opened, shippers in Eastern North Carolina had few rail options and often trucked containers to Norfolk, Charlotte or Wilmington. The new terminal brought rail within a short drive of farms, food processors and plants across the coastal plain, which has helped attract new industrial investment.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation and local economic development groups supported CCX as a way to create jobs and improve freight connections. Industrial parks in Edgecombe and Nash counties now market their proximity to the terminal.

For local drayage carriers, CCX created a steady new market of short moves between the terminal and nearby customers, as well as longer regional runs. Shippers benefit from both rail access and an expanding pool of carriers familiar with the terminal.
